What is Difference Between Klonopin and Ativan

Klonopin and Ativan which fall under the class Benzodiazepine come useful in curing anxiety-related problems. The drugs Klonopin and Ativan are used to treat chronic anxiety, seizures and insomnia.

Both Klonopin and Ativan affect chemicals in the brain which may have become unbalanced, and cause anxiety. Klonopin is mainly used for seizure disorders and panic disorders, while Ativan is mostly prescribed for anxiety disorders.  In spite of falling under the same category of medications, Klonopin and Ativan have a lot of differences which are mentioned as under:

1) Klonopin (Clonazepam): it is useful for relieving short-term anxiety and sleeplessness. It has less severe withdrawal symptoms. It can be used alone or with other medicines to treat seizures.

Ativan:   It is useful for relieving short-term anxiety and sleeplessness. It has less drug interactions compared to other benzodiazepines and therefore it might be a better option for you if you’re taking multiple medications.

2) Klonopin (Clonazepam):  It works by influencing mood and behavior through the Central Nervous System.

Ativan:   It acts by decreasing mental excitation through the Gamma-Aminobutyric acid.

3) Klonopin:  It has lesser severe withdrawal symptoms.

Ativan:   Even after using it for only a month one starts experiencing withdrawal symptoms.

4) Klonopin (Clonazepam):  It is mostly prescribed to those patients who are suffering from seizure disorders.

Ativan:  It is given to patients who are suffering from severe anxiety problems

5) Klonopin (Clonazepam):  One needs to take it 2-3 times a day before its effects can be realized.

Ativan:   Patient needs 3-4 doses daily for its efficacy to be realized successfully.

6) Klonopin (Clonazepam):  Its consumption can lead to side effects like Incoordination and Hyper salivation.

Ativan: Its consumption can lead to side effects like Hypotension, Respiratory depression, and Apnea.

7) Klonopin (Clonazepam):  It has broad anti-seizure properties, high lipophily, and has its application in treating long-term epilepsy.

Ativan: It comes in oral liquid and injectable formulation. It is an important drug in the ICU 4 and has useful sedative properties and is less affected by variables such as advanced age, hepatic dysfunction, etc.

8) Klonopin (Clonazepam):  It cures by providing anti-depressant effects.

Ativan:  It cures by producing euphoric effects.

9) Klonopin (Clonazepam):  It has very high lipid solubility.

Ativan: It has very low lipid solubility which causes it to stay in the vascular compartment. Consequently, it makes patient experiences peak effects for 6-12 hours.
